Region to miss digitalisation deadline

The 4th SADC preparatory meeting for the 2015 World Radio Communications Conference has revealed that most countries in the region will not meet the 17th June digitalisation deadline.

With nearly five weeks before the deadline, most member states are reported to have done between 60 and 70 percent of the work towards digitalisation.

In this regard, member states will need to bilaterally agree on to how to deal with analogue services beyond 17th June deadline since there will be no more protection in terms of interference, says the Chairperson of the SADC World Radio Communications Conference (WRC-15) Engineer Lloyd Momba.

“Countries can agree on how to deal with the phasing out of the analogue services. There are other countries who have done very well like Mauritius and Tanzania. Other countries have done about 60 to 70% and we hope within the next month or so there will be some progress,” said Engineer Momba.

Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe Acting Director General, Engineer Baxton Sirewu, who spoke on the need for more broadband spectrum, could not comment on the country`s readiness to meet the deadline and referred all questions to the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe.

“We are coming with technical regulatory and operational condition that will allow the operation of mobile broadband side by side with digital television. We need more spectrums for broadband and we need every Zimbabwean to be connected," said Engineer Sirewu.

Government has, however, assured the nation it will meet the 17th June deadline.
